We have been sorting out our winter things in the house, picking up rugs and putting them away for next year painting walls and ceilings as they were so black with soot from the fires also due to the fact that I havent used the duster very much. I hope we can muster up the enthusiasm to start on our bedroom this week, my pet hate is change over of the wardrobe here, I still seem to hang on to the things that I didnt wear this year, yes I know what they say, if you didnt wear it this year throw it, but that isnt true for me, I often find something that I loved years ago and want to wear it. But its coming on gradually
.On Friday we went to a hot therme with some friends, I really needed it as my back and hips have been giving me gip for a couple of weeks now. It was rather posh, called the Therme di Papa, it was a famous therme for the past Popes even Michealangelo went there some times. There was very hot water pumping out of the wall into a very large pool, at one end it was hot and cooler at the deep end, many people go there after operations etc. one can have massages, there were spas and lots of sunning areas, we took a packed lunch and spent thhe whole day there, I had the most wonderful sleep that night.
The Finals are this evening where several schools of music come together, it's being held in a big new theatre near the sea, so it should be good. Im looking forward to it.
I forgot too that we went to dinner at a friends house that looks right over the lake, this photo was taken from her window, you can see the rooftops in the photograph, what a wonderful view to see every time you open the window. caprejanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243122235522031168noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379218911196647743.post-81265212752414673412013-05-21T18:04:00.002+02:002013-05-21T18:04:58.478+02:00Carding cashmere.

Today I have been alone for most of the day (apart from the animals) this is a very rare occasion and I have had a lovely day, just doing what came to mind.

We have had showers on and off so I decided to potter off to the local weekly market to pick up some bread and some fruit, by the time I arrived home, the sun had popped its head out so I made myself a bread and cheese lunch and sat outside, admiring my flower pots that I did yesterday. Actually they didnt look that good, as the rain had flattened them and they looked a little sorry for themselves, hence no pics.

I then went to make up the beds for my son, wife and grandson, who are arriving tomorrow from England.

I am really happy as I havent seen them for over a year and I know that Ryan my 12 year old grand-son is taller than me now. Danielle my grand-daughter is not able to make it, as she has an exhibition next week at Uni I shall miss her, but will be lovely to see the others.

I thought I would card the whole lot, then it would be ready to spin when can.

It was a little rough with little bits of hay in, but I quite like that effect. I also ended up smelling a bit 'goatie' too, so earthy, I love it.

I dont know why, but I enjoy spinning wool when it's dirty and after when its in a hank I wash it gently a few times and that is when the suprise comes, lovely clean wool, all ready to make ???????
We had a busy weekend planting and tidying up the garden,we are continuously planting our vegetables which I hope takes us through to the winter months.
My herbs have shot up so tall this year.
Recently our big tractor broke and we have had to sell it really cheaply because it would have cost 4000 euros to fix it, so now we are going to pay someone to cut the grass in the field whenever it needs it. But at the moment the grass is growing so quickly, we like to keep it fairly short because of the snakes.

The grass was cut last week and is laying on the ground it looks pretty awful, I love to see the long grasses and wild flowers, but I suppose our and the animals safety comes first.

I could hardly see my wool studio because the grass was so tall so I do hope nothing has slithered in there, it really needs a good tidying out.

Today we went out for lunch to a lovely restaurant in the Etruscan settlement of Vulci, before we went in we had a short walk by the little castle and the very old Roman bridge, the sun was shining but there was a cool breeze blowing in from the sea, I forgot to take my camera as usual.

I cant wait to get back into my painting again but need to pursue the outside work while the going is good, I have now finished combing the goats wool had a good batch, trimmed their hooves, oiled their horns, but I'm not as strong or young as I used to be and was absolutely 'done for' when I'd finished.
Im off now for a long soak before I catch up with some letter writing that I am so behind with.
We had a great evening yesterday, one of our friends has a very large piece of land that he is going to build a hotel on, it's in an area where there are lots of natural hot thermal springs, and we were invited with some other friends to use the man made pool but with natural hot water.
It was amazing, when we arrived in this beautiful field full of asparagus, which grows in abundance on the warm land and poppies, we drove for about 2 kilometers and behind a clump of trees was this quite ugly concrete crater, about 10 deep and 25 across, after turning on electric, pumps etc, the hot water came gushing out so fast and within minutes it was half full. and lost its ugliness. and when we climbed into the water it was wonderful, there was a slight smell of sulphur but not too bad, the temperature must have been around 35 degrees, so lovely for your aches and pains, so after a good soak and swim we dried ourselves off in the breeze and sun, donned on our dressing gowns, then got down to a fantastic picnic of samosas, chicken, eggs, salads and wine.
Did I sleep well? Yes I certainly did.

The last few weeks have been very trying for me, apart from the winter blues, I have had a load of tests at the hospital which seem to take forever and we have to drive a long way, so it is like the whole days being wasted. The positive thing is, that the hospitals are fantastic here in Italy,so thorough, so I should be thankful that I am being very well cared for.
We both had influenza which I got over fairly quickly but I have feltso tired the whole of February a little weepy and havent been sleeping terribly well, I just cannot wait for the warmer weather to arrive although we had a beautiful sunny weekend we decided to have a cookout which was fun, and so nice to be outside. My Mimosa tree is now in full blossom too, such a sunny yellow.
He said the island was very pretty with lovely views and so small but tragic, the people that live there have to look at it daily. There are 400 divers and expert worker that have been brought in to try to refloat or dismantle it.

I know Im a misery.
The new hens have started to lay but have been getting into my neighbours garden so a lot of fence fixing has been required. A friend gave me a bag of eggs last week just look how pale the yolk of her egg is compared to my hens delightful efforts

On those rather depressing notes, I have a something quite pleasing that has happened, I have been asked to teach my method of painting on a creative holiday in June at a creative community where I live. I recently wrote a kind of a book which was, going through my way of creating the paintings that I do. So I am very confident now that it will be great. We are at the moment working out a programme, with profiles, food, walks, visits etc. also, I will be getting paid.hehe. So if you would like to participate just book here haha
This is one of the paintings that I am exhibiting the end of this month about flow and water.

We are also trying to concentrate on our vegi patch, getting it ready to plant up. I love doing this its so theraputic.
Anyway Im sure that lots more has happened since I last posted but I cannot think of anything terribly exciting to tell you, so until next time, keep well and happyX.
The weather today has been foul, we've had a big thunder storm, a flurry of snow and lots of rain, now the countryside is covered with a cold foggy mist, so I havent ventured further than fetching in the cat who insisted on sitting on the balcony during the storm.
Last weekend one of our good friends celebrated her 50th birthday with a fun evening at her house, it was a small party and everyone contributed food, and as I said in my last blog I made a dessert of profiteroles, we had a great time, I bought another musical candle from the chinese shop and stuck it on the top of the cake. There is a way of lighting this candle it opens all the petals of the flower light up and it starts to play 'happy birthday' but after a few glasses or two, the unknown candle lighter (it wasnt me) didnt read the instructions and just lit the wick instead of the centre of the candle and off went the firework, the plastic petals on the flower fell off, wax flew everywhere whilst it was loudly singing' happy birthday' to you, the same thing happened at my party too, we just couldnt stop laughing and at the same time trying to stop the wax going over the profiteroles, so the candle was promptly put outside, still singing its little head off. Again the candle was the highlight of the party. My friend rang the next morning to say the candle was still chanting in the garden.
The mayor was there and several other syndicates from Canino. They had a band and a long lunch with several courses. Alba was presented with a plaque and then waltzed with the mayor, It was very moving and memorable, she is a fantastic, bright lady and doesnt even need spectacles.
Thursday, during the day we went to lake for a coffee, then called by to see a friend who had arrived from England, then did some shopping, in the evening we went to dinner with some of our Norwegian friends who have a holiday home here in Canino, that too was a beautiful evening.
Friday my husband thought he had a hangover because we were drinking 'rough wine' made by the locals, but later that morning he realised he had come down with influenza so I have been very busy nursing the patient (haha) thank goodness he isnt a woman, he could never multitask. I realised too that it was easier to keep in in bed and pop in time to time.
Today he is feeling a lot better and I have now got a sore throat and am desperately fighting getting anything.
I finally managed to purchase some medicine to inject my goats with, what a lot of form filling in though, just to kill a few lice, that made me really happy as I couldnt bear the thought that they were so itchy. I almost had a heart attack when I was told how much it cost though, but I shall have to cut down on the housekeeping for a few weeks. As long as they are happy, I managed to inject Picasso yesterday and am about to catch Botticelli and give him the works.
I dont make very good desserts or even cakes so I have dressed this one up a little with chocolate and will take a thick sauce to pour over. I did eat quite a few when I was making them too, even if I say it myself, they were delicious.caprejanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243122235522031168noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379218911196647743.post-40693983637343565142013-01-29T18:27:00.001+01:002013-01-29T18:27:21.064+01:00Another beautiful dayThis is a very short blog, I havent been around too much recently, i make no excuses but my life seems quite uneventful at the moment, so I didnt really want to bore anyone. The weather has been very temperamental too, we have had quite a lot of rain in short periods and lovely warm sunshine. Yesterday was so miserable, it was grey and rained the whole day, I was at the hospital for my annual check for a few hours, so it didnt bother me that much, although I find it very difficult to be colourful and creative when it is so grey, but today it was so warm and sunny we were working outside without our coats.
Unfortunately I dont seem to be able to download any pics on my blog. We left very early yesterday, for Florence, we stopped on the way for breakfast, the weather was a little grey though, but Florence was buzzing as usual. We didnt get to the Gallery of Marino Marini but wandered around the town drank coffee and cake, wondered over the Golden bridge and strolled along the river, I felt very liberated and grown up.. It was good because we know Florence quite well, so we chose where we wanted to go. Later we had a lovely lunch of soup and pasta in a tiny Trattoria, and after we then decided that we should head home,it was a long trek but was worth it.
Arriving home, my daughter and husband had arrived for the weekend so they had kept our fires going, we were very tired so settled in for the night.

We hadnt planned to do much today but the phone rang around 10 and my son in law was on the phone( he was in the flat below) he said we are all going out for lunch today, so no cooking again.
So we then decided to go off to one of the big stores in Tarquinia as they had a brilliant sale on, I bought some boots for 9Euros and two Jumpers for 7 everything in the shop was half price. When we got back we went off to the restaurant for lunch.
The restaurant we went to is one of our favourites but we dont go very often, the food they serve is typical Italian country style, and today was the festival of St Antonio and the beginning of the Carnival period so we had the food that the shepherds ate in ancient times. I cannot even write down what we ate, because there were so many courses and I am still stuffed, and I crashed out this afternoon for a long nap. I could not believe it when my phone rang around 5 and a friend invited us over for dinner this evening, phew Im sorry but I could not eat another thing, so I politely declined. Tomorrow I shall eat only salads and give my body a treat.caprejanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243122235522031168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379218911196647743.post-73724909139332284292013-01-18T14:27:00.001+01:002013-01-18T14:30:27.412+01:00Is the snow going to settleWhen I left my art group last night, I drove home past the lake a flurry of snow had just started to come down, but by the time I had reached home it had turned into rain.
It was my husbands birthday yesterday, but we had decided not to go out, but have some friends over tonight for dinner, so have been busy preparing this morning.
Thank goodness there is no snow, its very pretty but so stops me doing so much, fortunately the sun has been out all morning but I still have my thermals on.

At the weekend, we are up at the crack of dawn to go off on a trip to Florence, we had planned to go as a birthday treat and a surprise for my friend Alison who was coming to stay, but unfortunately she was unable to come due to illness.
I love Florence, it is a beautiful city, with a romantic ambiance that surrounds it. Its small enough too to get to know it quite well too. There is a wonderful gallery/museum with the works of Marino Marini, who I absolutely adore, Im not sure if it will be open but need to check as I would love to go again, I go every time I go to Florence. I havent been able to download any pics of his sculptures or paintings, but take a look on line.
When I lived in the UK I was in a choir and for two years we went to Florence music festival, to sing with an orchestra, it was magical. I really would love to find a choir here, but unfortunately most of the choirs are church based and that means going to church every Sunday to sing mass, but sorry that's not for me. I love to sing all types of music.
I am unable to put any pics today, there seems to be a problem somewhere. so have a good weekend .Jxcaprejanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243122235522031168noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379218911196647743.post-56272520892972374082013-01-17T15:24:00.001+01:002013-01-17T15:26:43.643+01:00Stop at homeIt has been cold here for the last couple of days even though the sun has been in out a lot of the time, we have had heavy showers at times. Also the goats were very grumpy yesterday, in fact Picasso actually butted me in the head when I when I bent down to collect his feeding bucket, he is usually a bully but he has never physically touched me before, so I had to give him a whack on the horns with the bucket Im afraid, I hate doing things like that, his lovely long eyelashes just blinked rapidly at me and then stood on his hind legs, towering over me, I just ignored him and he backed off. I cant be angry with him for long but I can be wary.
Have you ever heard of Kefir? I was given a jar of water Kefir a few weeks ago, its a benificial probiotic bacteria.
The grains multiply so you can make more to give to friends etc. I have felt quite energetic since taking it.
Although I did make some orange marmalade yesterday, and before my art group I took a walk along the lakeside.

Some years ago I did a two year course in Reflexology, with anatomy and biology, with an intensive exam at the end. I used Reflexology in my work, which was an Occupational Therapist, and specialized, working with people with learning disabilities, I also, at one point I had a private clientele.

I really enjoyed this work, but when we moved house and area, I had to make the decision to give up my practice for lack of space, etc.and haven't really done much since, but last weekend one of my friends had a stiff neck and I suggested that I do some reflexology on her, she loved it and said her neck felt much easier. Then another friend that was present, asked me if I would give her and her husband some sessions, so I have worked 2 sessions this week and they too loved it and are coming again next week. I have earned a little money too. That's great, I must add though, that I feel very guilty taking money from friends, but they insisted and said I should start a practice.
I am considering getting some leaflets printed and just see the response, a little extra cash would be a great help also.
Where we live there are quite a few people doing Holistic massage etc. but not Reflexology. So we shall see.
I have mixed feelings about doing this too regularly, as I desperately want to pursue my art work, Im sure it will all work out though.
It seems a long period since we were planting seedlings in the ground, and cant wait to start again.

This afternoon turned very cold and a storm blew in from the sea and it rained all afternoon, I did a little painting but it was freezing in my work-space so fed the goats, shut the hens up, then returned back home into my lovely warm house.

This evening Im going to slob in front of the tele, dinner on my lap.with a glass or two, well it is Friday.

Have a good weekend everyone. J
Had a really nice weekend, it was the weekend of the Befana, she's an old lady that brings good children a gift, I think she looks more like a witch than an old lady and some of toys, etc are quite frightening, The weather has been glorious with lots of warm sunshine, so Saturday was a good time to start thinking( yes I mean thinking) about some of the spring jobs that must be done. I did get some of the guest sheets out and washed them and a large duvet that I squashed into the washing machine. I then painted for a couple of hours I'm working on 3 large paintings at the moment, this one isnt finished yet, after lunch went for a walk along the lake on, surprisingly it was so quiet, we seemed to be the only people out and about. Had a lazy evening watching tele.
One of the other guest then suggested that we went to her house later that evening for pizza, well what can I say? everyone agreed so we did too. We went home and had a little nap and fed the animals and then out again for another eating competition. I am getting so fat. Well our friend Rina is a great cook so when we arrived she was well into the pizza making and she was frying them;We had different toppings that we could add to them, I dont remember ever eating fried pizza but it was good, and guess what was for dessert? Pizza with sugar sprinkled all over.mmmmmmmmmmm it was delicious. But so many calories. But it was a lovely relaxing day and I didnt cook a thing.
Today, Monday was another bright sunny day, so I carried on doing the little chores that I am so behind with. A never-ending story.

I was asked a few months ago if I would give two little children English lessons so they came today. Its quite fun working with the little ones I really enjoyed it. We had a tea party and sang songs and danced. it was great. So far the New year has been quite organized and productive, I am still being positive and trying to keep my timetable in order, this is a great challenge for me, but am feeling content, in control and happy at the moment.
What a lovely day, the sun has been so warm, in fact it was chillier in our house today. We worked outside in our shirts the whole morning until about 2.30 ,and continued pruning the Oleanders, it was beautiful. This afternoon the sun has disappeared and its a little grey but a few hours outside made me feel good.I cut off the last rose today I think its time.

After lunch I went to check the post box, inside there was a parcel, it was a book that had traveled all the way from South Africa, it had been to so many countries before reaching me in Italy, including New Zealand, Canada, Portugal, and many more.

The idea and organization is called Bookcrossing.com if you've never heard of it, check it out on the web.

I've been using Bookcrossing since arriving in Italy, its a brilliant idea, if you love to read, also you can register every book that you own, each book that you register is given a number so you have a personal record.
If you really want to get involved, one of things that you can do, is if you look into the forum part, then scroll down to the book-ring and book-ray column, there is a great idea of a Book-ring which I use all the time, if you have a book that you really don't want to part with, you can loan it out in a ring where each person that wants to read it sends it on to the next person, the book often travels around the world and is read by all kinds of people. I have made many pen friends too.
I have also started Book-rings, I especially like to see which country it is being read. Its like a gypsy book.
I know one has to think about the cost of postage but it is so exciting when a book that I asked for about a year ago arrived this morning. I try to limit the amount of books that I request, as I once got carried away and it cost me a loads of postage sending them on.
Another idea is that you can also leave a book in a place somewhere and it will hopefully go travelling, books are often journalled, which it great fun, I have often left a book that I want to travel on a plane or the airport and have even left one in a church. I love it. Take a look at the site.
So my house is back to normal, thank goodess because the cats just love the tinsel, its always strewn everywhere and Bailey was trying to eat it the other day.
I did quite a lot of cleaning today as I havent done much since before Christmas, it was very dusty and hairy as we have two wood burning fires and lots of animals around the house, it was all top show I'm afraid. But am now suffering because my back andknees are very painful but will take a hot bath and pill and return back good as new.
It was good to throw out all the bits and pieces left in the refrigerator too, it looks rather empty now, so will have to do some shopping before the weekend.

I haven't been to the sales this year, the sales here in Italy are really genuine too.
The course, is not about teaching someone to paint, but to show, that everyone has a creative side within them I intend to help to show this via paint, colour, music, drawing, dance, meditation, by doing this, will help free their creativity and overcome any fears that one would have had. I have been using this method over the last 3 months and have thoroughly enjoyed myself and look how positive I am, to be able to write this about myself and what I can do.
I am now in the process of organizing my workspace which is a little cold at the moment so I will let you know in the next few day how it is progressing. I havent yet worked out whether to do a weekly course or a holiday based one yet, I shall work on that one soon.
Well, I have to go now, usual chores, goat walking, feeding etc. but thank you for listening, I would love any feedback or help that anyone could give me, especially if you have run courses now or in the past.
Maybe I should take another photography course too my photographs are always so bad.caprejanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243122235522031168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379218911196647743.post-70813185301719233622012-12-31T16:22:00.001+01:002012-12-31T16:22:22.588+01:00New Year 2013 Im sure everyone is busy getting ready for the New Year celebrations so this is a quick message wishing all my blogging friends the best New Year ever. We are at home this year and are having a quiet dinner with our family and am looking forward to seeing the old year out and the new one in with them.
This year has flown by, but has been full and eventful which I am so grateful for. I am also grateful to my friends and family that give me so much pleasure and encouragement.

The world didn't end as the Mayans predicted (thank goodness for that) but I truly believe that there was a kind of truth in the prediction and that 2013 will bring new changes and a new energy that will flow into each of us and that we will become more aware and sensitive to each other.

I pray that WE can be the change for the future by sharing our love, kindness and generosity much more than we usually do and become united in this very hard and difficult world........

I wish for you and your loved-ones, good health, much happiness, peace and love in your lives always.

Best wishes and love
I decided to take a stroll into the little fishing village of Marta this morning and have a coffee in one of the bars, it was a beautiful day, how different it makes me feel when the sun shines. There were lots of people around but many of the shops and bars were closed, so I headed to a tiny little bar that sits on the edge of the lake, there was a sharp wind coming across the lake and waves were coming in over the wall and showering the road.

I sat outside to take my coffee in the wind and sun with the spray just reaching me, it gave me a spiritual feeling, it was as though I was being sprinkled with fresh energy and a feeling of warmth inside. I thought "God or whatever we believe in, reaches out to us in so many different ways and so often we miss the moment" so I am going to try to be more meditative and mindful about my daily life in whatever I do. My life is always full of hustle and bustle, so, I am making a big effort to slow down my pace and have more of these moments.
And wondered if he ever had these moments to take in the wonder and beauty that life gives us, the lake is so beautiful, so I cannot see how he couldn't have.

It all a bit of a mystery I know and I am being a bit philosophical and thoughtful, but how refreshed and energized I am feeling, I have had a nice lunch, written my blog (like a good gal)and now I am off to walk my goats and hope to receive some more of life's blessings.caprejanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243122235522031168noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379218911196647743.post-86315210534574863622012-12-28T18:20:00.000+01:002012-12-28T18:20:02.332+01:00Birthday

Yesterday was my birthday, its strange having a birthday so near all the Christmas/New Year festivities because it never seems to be like other peoples I usually get Christmassy gifts but this year was so great.
I was a little sad and grumpy during the day as my two sons that live in the UK hadn't telephoned or even emailed a birthday wish neither did their children, they have never been very good at remembering my special day, and I forgive them every year and hope they will remember next year.I had lots of good wishes from friends old and new, that cheered me so much. What would we do without our friends. I must add that one of my grandchildren did send a message later that night to say happy birthday from all the family, I loved that.
I was fairly busy making the evening meal, as we had invited a few friends round for the evening. I decided to make it easy so made a casserole of beef and mushrooms in wine, and a lefties turkey curry, some rice, boiled potatoes and some garlic bread, so easy. I am always a little nervous cooking for Italian friends as they usually have these wonderful sit down dinners of about 10 courses but I decided to be brave and piled up the plates on the table for everyone to help themselves and to find somewhere to sit. My daughter said we could use her part of the house as it is much bigger than ours, it worked out brilliantly.
Everyone seemed to be having a good time, eating, drinking, a little dancing, opening presents, chatting, it was great. the funniest part of the evening was when John brought out a cake made from ice cream with a big plastic flower on the top, he lit the wick, and the petals all opened it started off so nicely, then a kind of firework started to flare and music inside the flower started singing happy birthday, then the plastic caught fire so he threw it out the window but 24 hours later it is on the window sill outside and its still playing the wretched song, its driving us crazy.
I think it was make in China so beware..............
It was a lovely evening !!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry we were so busy we forgot to take picisx

I cooked Chinese food last night and my dishwasher has broken so I had quite a lot of clearing up to do this morning, but the sun was shining, I had music playing, so it didnt seem so bad.
My husband drove into town to the local bakers and bought some freshly baked croissants while I made the coffee, and we sat in the outside in the sun and had our late breakfast, it was very nice.

We then went to the beach for a walk with the dogs, the beach was still littered with wood from the storms a couple of weeks ago but the sea was calm and very peaceful.

I was also surprised at how many different mushrooms and toadstools there were hidden in the long grass, I am not familiar with them so I never pick them to eat but I know many people here in Italy do so. I have bought a book but the poisonous ones looked the same as the edible ones, so I never take chances, there are still a number of wild flowers growing too.

When he actually chopped off the largest branch which we counted 25 circles inside, I almost cried, it was so beautiful, the needles were so lush and there were cones, beautiful seedlings and new growth sprouting all over but it had to be done, such a pity. I'm sure this happens all the time and we will most probably have to do have to do some of the other trees . We did check first to see if there were any birds nesting in the tree.
I'm off later to my art group, then after going to a friends for dinner, we have had a busy week eating out as one of our friends is back from Norway for a week so everyone is inviting everyone to share dinner for her, it is a bit hectic but have enjoyed it so far also I dont have to cook, and my dishwasher is broken too.caprejanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243122235522031168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379218911196647743.post-20753058920565599272012-11-12T15:51:00.000+01:002012-11-12T15:51:54.140+01:00We've been very busy working outside for some time now pruning our massive pine trees, some of them have struggled this year with the dry weather, the person that planted them many years ago, obviously didn't realize how close they would be, once they grew to their maximum height.

They are pretty horrible to prune as the very sticky sap just oozes out and you stick like glue to everything that you touch and its almost impossible to wash off. Also we are unable to burn the wood even when its dry, as the sap turns into tar, then goes hard and blocks the chimney. So for the moment we have given the goats mose of them to climb and play on. They are loving them.

We had to change some of the fencing too as Picasso has found he can jump that extra foot which is now 7 foot, he has been escaping then eating the olives, luckily we were around when he started this so patched it up quickly until we changed the new bit of fencing.

We had several friends for dinner on Saturday, as our guest were nearly all Italian I decided to cook Italian dishes, the antipasti was of ham, salami, cheeses etc. then, a porcine lasagna, then lemon chicken and vegetables and salad, fruit salad, ice cream, cakes that our friends had brought and too much wine as usual, but a good evening. My dishwasher has broken so there was a mountain of dishes to do, so I confess I was a little too p--sed to do them until Sunday.

I cannot ever remember that having ever seen so much rain in all my life (even though I come from England where it rains a lot). The sky was dark grey and the thunder and lightning went on all day long and throughout the night, I have never seen or heard of this before, especially here in Italy. Storms are usually quite spectacular but for a storm not to stop for so many hours was a little scary. The dogs were unsettled all night too.

It has started to rain again now and part of our cantina has flooded through the walls but luckily there is a drain that the water escapes into. I do hope the walls hold though as they hold up our house.

Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny so I am hoping things will dry out pretty quickly.

I was hoping to get some marmalade made this week but that will have to go on hold until we dry out a little more.

The olive picking started last week too, Im sure a lot of the olives were blown off of the trees yesterday, its such a pity because many of the Caninese rely on the money from the olives to live on, and its such an important time for them in our town of Canino as the oil is very special.

I am now off to check on the animals as another storm seems to be brewing and the rain has started belting down, I wonder if we are getting the after effects of the hurricane Sandy I hope not, so many people suffered and we are nothing like them.

Yesterday afternoon the hail and wind was so strong a heavy it was about 4inches deep on the road, I was actually out driving, there were cars skidding all over the place, ending up on the verge.

Today the temperature was very low, I havent even packed away my summer clothes yet. Out came the vests, boots and jumpers, wood was brought in and this afternoon we lit the stove, I cooked a wintery casserole for dinner and will start packing away my sun dresses and shorts tomorrow. I am hoping it doesn't last as I hate the winter and the cold.
We went to some friends for dinner Saturday evening, they live in a medieval village carved into the side of a hill, after we had eaten we went for a stroll around the town, it was so nice, the little old houses carved into the rock, how on earth did they do that without power tools.
Also recently Ive joined a group on Facebook called Poplar, Limehouse, and the Isle of Dogs. I was born in the East End of London, many moons ago, it's wonderful, full of people, historical and recent photographs have popped up, bringing up memories from way way back, even before my birth.
I added this picture today. The little child is me, at my aunt and uncles wedding. I love to look at old photographs.caprejanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03243122235522031168noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379218911196647743.post-2308947546247863452012-10-26T15:28:00.002+02:002012-10-26T15:29:16.911+02:00Trip on the lake and SpikeyA good week, the weather has been wonderful and reached the 90s yesterday.
We belong to a cultural association that organizes different events around Lake Bolsena, provides information, festivals, checking the pollution in the water, and this year have been granted quite a bit of money for social art events, which should be good. On Wednesday morning everyone was invited to a meeting by the lake, we were taken to the big pleasure boat and were invited aboard, that took us out to one of the islands on the lake and moored in the Etruscan harbour, where we had the meeting on the boat, we were offered wine and nibbles and the weather was beautiful, and such a lovely place to have a meeting.
The little art group that I go to started again, so went and did a bit of crappy drawing, I havent drawn anything for some months now and I have to say it was hard work, but good to be back with the group.
I have also been trying to finish the outside goat/chicken sheds as big storms are supposed to be on their way in the next few days, but the goats are such a pain when work is being done in their pad, I shut them in the small paddock to keep out of my way and Picasso jumped the fence so I had to let him in eventually where he was pushing his nose and horns into everything. But have finally burnt all the old hay and straw and the sheds sprayed and clean.
Then one of my three cats Spikey (was Spicy because of her colour) she turned up on our doorstep about a year ago on a cold rainy night, and never left. (yes I know we are soft)she is a lovely natured and fun cat, she came in with a gooey face and when I looked more closely she had a huge chunk out of her face, Spikey is half feral, but loves us, food, cuddles, and hour or two on the bed or sofa and also Lilly my dog who let her suckle from her when she arrived, but, she cannot stand being in the house for very long, I knew she would be very upset going in a carrier to the vet so I wrapped her in a towel and cleaned her as much as possible (she was going crazy) and have kept her in for the last two nights, she was wailing to go out for hours, and strangely she didnt quite know how to use the litter tray, (I wont go into those details though.)She escaped this morning but has come back for lunch and scooted out again but I will put on some more antibiotic powder later when I trick her into the house again, I want to try to keep her in at night if possible for thats when the strays and nasty cats come around to fight.
